21st Century Financial Advisor
By MacKenzie Stuart
A typical day for MacKenzie Stuart includes a flight out of Oxford Airport in the morning, followed by a consultation on financial investments in the afternoon.
Stuart is a licensed commercial pilot who flew corporate aircraft for Franchise 500 companies for several years. However in 2010, she started a second career as a financial adviser, working as a representative with Tiger Investment Services.
Based in Boston, Stuart opened a satellite office in Washington, Conn., in November.
It was a homecoming for the Shepaug Valley High School graduate who grew up in Washington.
"I was working at Harvard's School of Public Health and was in a career transition when I learned Ted Tiger was hiring," Stuart said. Tiger Investment is a comprehensive financial services firm.
Stuart is a University of New Hampshire graduate with a degree in economics and tourism. She also studied finance at Kaplan Intermediate College.
Russ Gandolfo is an investment client and a co-pilot for Stuart. She was his flight instructor when he obtained his private pilot's license.
"MacKenzie and her associate did a risk analysis of my portfolio and showed me how risky some of my investments were," said Gandolfo. "At 60, I don't want to be in high-risk investments.
"MacKenzie sat down with me and went over investment possibilities. She's got the personality that makes you just want to learn," he added.
Stuart's present focus is educating women and helping them develop a financial acumen that will bring success. "Our intention as a firm is to expand our clientele to include small business owners with a strong female presence and female pilots in the Northeast area," she explained.
"As I've talked to women, I find many have no idea about finances," she said.
"I've heard stories about women experiencing financial loss through divorce, when they suddenly had the responsibility of taking on management of their own portion of liquidated assets from the marriage and had no idea what to do."
Then there's people who are just very intimidated about investing. "I help them realize that there are safe avenues to follow in investing. And that the money they work so hard for won't be lost."
